Salt of the Earth beauty

Salt of the Earth "Still life with plums"

I call the white pottery 'Salt of the Earth' because it adds taste to the ordinary. These pieces have the inner beauty of things modest and humble, well-suited to their intended use. This stoneware is 'handy' in its original sense: it feels good in the hand. At the same time it is crafted to delight the eye with fair form and proportion. Each piece of 'Salt of the Earth' stoneware comes complete with variations, little 'perfections,' direct from the hand and the eye of the artist.

Bumpy Bowl

Large Bowl

Milk glass with everted dimples, bumps to us, was quite popular in George Washington's time. This bowl's bumps are bigger. There's been a lot of inflation since then. It is really a nice stoneware bowl.

Little One

Small Bowl

"Though he be little, he is fierce." Shakespeare said it, Seabiscuit claimed it; our little bowl has earned it.

Dome Lid

Large Bowl

This is a classic shape. You can see houses made just like this in the Taranto region of Italy, at the heel of the boot. They are built like beehives with ornamentation at the capstone as has been done for several thousand years. Our version covers your cheese or butter and is, of course, much smaller than a house. It is pictured here with our petal plate, sold separately.

This cup is named for those puffy fair weather clouds. It has that tactile attraction which just makes you want to hold it.

Professor's Bowl

Large Bowl

I am told that an art history professor encountered my bowl while browsing at the Grove Gallery in Aurora NY. He left without it, but came back for it the next day. He said he couldn't live without it. Its oval proportions stick in the mind.

Fish Plate

If you want to feed a man for a day, give him a fish. If you want to give him something to put his lunch onto every day, give him a fish plate. It may be used as a luncheon plate, or as a serving piece.

This little vase is one of our most popular models. It is just the right size for one turn about the garden with your shears. Don't run with them.

Paint Brush

My ceramic sculptured paintbrush has that certain quiet strength of a working tool viewed in repose. I made the first paintbrush as a gift for my brother who is in the house painting business.

"I am a proud collector of the beautiful and whimsical work of Jacques Schickel. Every time I use a bowl, vase or plate from Maryhill Clayworks, I'm reminded of a country garden on a languid summer day."
